Neil Young is in the middle of his Coastal Tour which marks his return to the road after a four-year touring hiatus. Young has been recording each show using “atmos/spatial” technology for an immersive listening experience. A note posted Sunday, July 9 on the Neil Young Archives website reveals the new recordings “are part of a bigger picture [the Neil Young Archives team is] working toward.”
“We were going to share our new atmos/spatial mixes (ATMOSPATIAL) of the Coastal tour,” began the NeilYoungArchives.com article. “We will not be doing that yet. Those surround mixes by the volume dealers are part of a bigger picture we are working toward. They will arrive with it. Sorry to maybe disappoint, but it will be worth it. The Process dictates the timing.”
The “Volume Dealers” mixing each show are Neil Young and frequent collaborator Niko Bolas. Cameras have been on hand at all Coastal Tour shows thus far with video potentially part of the “bigger picture” Young and his team referenced. In the meantime fans will have to wait to hear the immersive recordings.
Neil Young’s Coastal Tour hits the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles tonight, Monday, July 10. The legendary performer will trek up the coast through the tour closer in Stateline, Nevada on Monday, July 24.
