The sky over Boston did a lot more than “Looks Like Rain” on Friday at the Phil Lesh & Friends show, which was canceled midway due to severe weather. During the band’s second set at Leader Pank Pavilion, intense rain and lightning forced the Grateful Dead bassist, his bandmates, and fans to evacuate the venue.
Things looked brighter earlier in the night when Lesh took the stage with his Friends Eric Krasno (guitar/vocals), Jason Crosby (keys/vocals), John Molo (drums/vocals), Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet/vocals), James Casey (saxophone/vocals), and his son Grahame Lesh (guitar/vocals) to start the show. The group spanned the Dead’s early career in the first set, opening the show with “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” from their 1967 self-titled debut, and included gems from throughout their songbook including “Brown-Eyed Women”, “He’s Gone”, and “Althea”. The improvisational highlight of the first set, however, came with a song from outside the traditional Grateful Dead sphere, Little Milton‘s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”, a favorite of the Jerry Garcia Band.
During the set break, storms began to roll in from Massachusetts Bay and over the harbor-side amphitheater, which was luckily protected by an overheard pavilion. The band pressed on for as long as possible though, truckin’ through an exploratory second set-opening “Jack Straw” through “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and finally a pairing of “Eyes of the World” into “Terrapin Station”. After the orchestral title track to the Dead’s 1977 album, Lesh was tasked with delivering the bad news, announcing the cancelation of the show as lightning pounded the area.

The band continues a Northeast run tonight, July 22nd, with a headlining set for “Jam Saturday” at Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue, NY followed the next night by a regular two-set show at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, CT.
