Between Jason Aldean‘s “Try That In A Small Town” dog whistle and the first preview of Roger Waters‘ wholly unnecessary The Dark Side of The Moon Redux, this was a bad week for music. The prodigal Pink Floyd co-founder on Friday shared his new take on “Money” and set a full-album release date for October 6th.
On the “Money” redux, Waters slows the pace down to a crawl for a jazz lounge type of vibe. Vocally, his delivery lands somewhere between Leonard Cohen impersonator and profoundly unsettling ASMR, or as his press release puts it “Waters extraordinary vocal performance adds fresh layers of profundity to his classic lyrics, and gravelly wisdom to his philosophical new creations.”
Remember the breakdown with the roaring saxophone solo that blasted right through the speakers? Well, now it’s an interlude of Roger Waters’ spoken word poetry. You wanted that instead of David Gilmour‘s guitar solo, right?

Fans may or may not remember the massive Animals reissue was delayed two years over arguments between Waters and Gilmour over the box set’s liner notes. Among other things, they disagreed on whose idea it was to record the sound of a cash register on “Money”. The squabble was just one example of Pink Floyd delaying reissues over minutiae so trivial that even Larry David wouldn’t waste his time quarreling about it. Interestingly, no cash register is heard on Waters’ new “Money”.

In a press release and video also shared Friday, Waters explains some of his reasoning behind remaking one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed albums of all time. He also reveals that he tacked on a new, 13-minute original song (labeled “Original Composition” on the tracklist) to the end of one of the most masterfully-sequenced albums in all of rock music.
“The original Dark Side of the Moon feels in some ways like the lament of an elder being on the human condition,” Waters wrote in a statement. “But Dave [Gilmour], Rick [Wright], Nick [Mason] and I were so young when we made it, and when you look at the world around us, clearly the message hasn’t stuck. That’s why I started to consider what the wisdom of an 80 year-old could bring to a reimagined version.
