Trey Anastasio Was Calling Out ‘Sad Motherfucker(s)’ Who Threw Objects Onstage Back In 2005

A recent spat of fans throwing things onstage – and often hitting performers – drew the ire of Adele.

“Have you noticed how people are like forgetting fucking show etiquette in America,” Adele said during a recent concert in Las Vegas. “They’re just throwing shit onstage. Have you seen that? [I] fucking dare you – dare you to throw something at me.”

Adele was commenting on a string of incidents involving musicians dealing with objects being thrown onstage. Bebe Rexha was injured by a man hurling a cell phone at her face and Kelsea Ballerini’s eye was injured by a bracelet thrown at her. Though not injured, P!NK responded to what appeared to be a deceased person’s ashes landing on her stage and Lil Nas X commented after a sex toy was chucked his way while performing (he was in Sweden, by the way, Adele).

These incidents served as reminders of the simple rule: Don’t throw things onstage at concerts.

Really, it is that simple. If you attend a concert and have something in your hand – a cell phone, bracelet, human remains, sex toy, glowstick, etc. – don’t throw it onstage. In fact, simply not throwing anything when you’re at a show will make for a more pleasant concertgoing experience for you, others in attendance and the performers everyone came to see.

Unfortunately, the problem of audience-thrown objects is not new. Back on December 2, 2005, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio paused his concert at The Warfield to chide the audience at the storied San Francisco venue. At the time, Phish was in the midst of a second hiatus and Anastasio was touring with the Trey Anastasio Band. During the show, Anastasio played a solo acoustic rendition of “Waves,” and then was joined by Jennifer Hartswick and Christina Durfee on backing vocals for “Invisible.”

An unidentified object was thrown at Anastasio, hitting him while performing “Invisible.” The guitarist managed to stay relatively calm as he paused his performance to call out the “sad motherfuckers” throwing things at him while onstage. Trey told The Warfield crowd:

“Funny because it’s near the end of this tour. Hopefully, I can keep the incredible spirit that I’m feeling in this room and still say what I’m about to say. But I’m gonna say this now because somebody just hit me with something during that song and I’m gonna tell you this because I’ve pretty much fucking had it at this point. I’m at a place that love, San Francisco. In a room that I love, The Warfield.

“But people have been fucking hit me with shit this whole tour. And I’ve been putting up with it – you know quarters and glowsticks, and that’s [a] really sad state of affairs. Whoever’s doing that, you’re a sad motherfucker. So, I feel fucking sorry for you. All of you. And if it’s you in the hat then fuck you. I hope it’s not you [laughs]. Sorry man.

“Seriously, I’ve been putting up with this the whole tour. I’ve got three very dear friends of mine: Page, Mike and Fish. We talk about this shit. We’re very happy right now. We’re happy, healthy people. I love playing music for you. But I’m sorry to say this, we’ve been having a great time tonight, but you know that’s the last time I hope somebody throws something at me. So please stop. I love playing music for you people. I’m doing my best up here to try to stay alive. Thank you.”

Anastasio performs a hopefully flying-projectile-less concert tonight with TAB at The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey followed by an appearance tomorrow at the Levitate Music Festival near Boston. Phish’s Summer Tour 2023 begins next Tuesday, July 11.
