Goose delivered their largest headline concert to date on Friday at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs, New York. The Connecticut-based jam quintet turned in a jam-heavy performance that included a 21-minute “Thatch” towards the end of the second set.
With pavilion, balcony and lawn seating, SPAC’s total capacity is 25,000. Goose heard it from the largest audience yet “that filled every available seat in the historic venue’s pavilion and balcony, leaving limited space on the general admission lawn,” as per a press release.
Goose’s debut at the beloved upstate New York shed was loaded with big jams. The concert saw the band perform 11 songs with seven of them surpassing the 15-minute mark. Five tunes were longer than 19 minutes as the five-piece displayed their flair for improvisation.
The quintet — guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach, bassist Trevor Weekz, drummer Ben Atkind and percussionist Jeff Arevalo — launched the milestone concert with a “Silver Rising” before showing off a little “California Magic” in the two-slot. The band then embarked on a 19-minute rendition of the electro-funk-tinged “Animal.” Goose kept exploring on a nearly 20-minute “Red Bird” ahead of a substantial, set-closing “Same Old Shenanigans (“SOS”) off the band’s 2021 album Shenanigan’s Nite Club.
Set two got underway with the longest song of the evening, a nearly 24-minute “The Empress Of Organos.” Goose then offered their cover of David Gray’s “Please Forgive Me.” The band continued with the aforementioned “Thatch,” another funky number the band stretched out on.
Rick and Peter led the group through the song’s lyric sequence before Mitarotonda tore into the tune on guitar. The quintet then broke it down with a clav-laced segment from Anspach which also included a “Tequila” tease. The jam then took a vibey turn with Anspach adding synth before Rick brought “Thatch” home. A pairing of “This Old Sea” and the title track to Goose’s 2022 album Dripfield closed out the second set. The quintet returned to encore with a nearly 20-minute “Factory Fiction.”
