“We’d like to bring someone to the stage now who’s a friend to everyone in the band, a friend to all, and very specially, a hero of mine,” Dead & Company guitarist John Mayer said before bringing out Dave Matthews for an extensive sit in earlier this week. Monday’s D&C concert in Boulder, Colorado was not the first time Mayer and his “hero” Matthews performed live together, though it had been several years since their previous collaboration.

Mayer joined the Dave Matthews Band on two occasions in 2007. Mayer and DMB first linked up on September 6, 2007, at a free, semi-private concert held for the University Of Virginia Tech at the start of the first semester after the tragic mass shooting that took place on its campus on April 16, 2007. The concert featured performances by DMB, Mayer, Nas and Phil Vassar. Late DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore sat-in with Mayer during his set on “Gravity.”

That evening’s concert also saw Mayer accompany Dave Matthews Band on “#41,” along with his guitarist and DMB cohort David Ryan Harris. Just shy of one month later, on October 2, 2007, Mayer once again joined Dave Matthews Band on “#41,” this time at the historic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Appearing on Dave Matthews Band’s sophomore album, 1996’s Crash, “#41” received its title because it was the 41st song written by the group. A recent article by American Songwriter investigated the origins of what’s become a live staple, writing:

Written by Matthews, the song is about feelings of being let down. But it’s not because of a relationship or even a family member. The song details a split with former manager Ross Hoffman, who owned rights to several of the band’s songs in the early 1990s. Citing creative differences, DMB fired Hoffman and hired a new manager, Coran Capshaw. Hoffman was disgruntled and felt he owned a share of the band’s profits, which led to a legal battle. Matthews then wrote ‘#41’ based on upset feelings he was going through. Hoffman had been a mentor and Matthews struggled with this fissure between him and his former pal.
