Neil Young concluded his first tour since 2019 on Monday at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys in Stateline, Nevada. Young’s solo acoustic Coastal Tour closer saw the legendary singer-songwriter breaking out “Tonight’s The Night” for the first time in five years.
Before Young hit the road he noted that he would focus on rarities from his massive catalog on his California-focused Coastal Tour. He certainly delivered as he dug up gems from his Buffalo Springfield days (“Burned,” “On The Way Home”) along with several live rarities from his mid-1990s albums with Crazy Horse (Sleeps With Angels) and Pearl Jam (Mirror Ball), which all became anchors in his Coastal Tour setlists.
Young also dusted off songs along the way including “Vampire Blues,” “Like A Hurricane” (played for the first time on pump organ in 20 years), Buffalo Springfield’s “I Am A Child” and more. Young, however, saved “Tonight’s The Night” for the tour finale.
Released in 1975, Tonight’s The Night was the third and final album of the so-called “Ditch Trilogy,” which saw Neil coping with the fame and pressure he felt after the success of 1972’s Harvest. On that album was a live cut of “The Needle And The Damage Done,” which was sadly a precursor to Tonight’s The Night as both songs deal with heroin addiction and overdose.
Not long after “The Needle And The Damage Done” came out in 1972, Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten died tragically from a heroin overdose. The following year, Young’s roadie Bruce Berry died of a drug overdose. The deaths of his friends can be seen as the beginning of the Tonight’s The Night era, which saw Young coping with his grief.
Although it was released in 1975, Tonight’s The Night was recorded in August–September 1973 — largely on August 26 — in Hollywood. Young was backed by The Santa Monica Flyers featuring frequent collaborator and steel guitar ace Ben Keith, multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren and Crazy Horse’s rhythm section of Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina.
That band would head down to the Sunset Strip to perform Tonight’s The Night material as the first show at the now-legendary Roxy Theater. It was recently announced that Young is set to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Roxy in September. The second-ever “Tonight’s The Night” performance took place opening night at the Roxy on September 20, 1973 after it debuted a month earlier at a show in Topanga Canyon.
Over the past 50 years, Young has largely kept “Tonight’s The Night” in his live repertoire save for a six-year drought in the mid-2000s and a three year absence between 2009 and 2012. The song has become more rare recently with just 13 plays in the decade. Young often plays the song on piano in a solo setting.
Young took a seat at his baby grand piano to perform “Tonight’s The Night” for the first time since October 1, 2018 about halfway through his Coastal Tour closer in Stateline, Nevada. Watch below:
