Watch Phish’s Wild ‘The Well’ Excursion At The Mann

Phish took new song “The Well” deep for its second-ever performance on July 25, night one of two at The Mann in Philadelphia. The band shared a pro-shot video of the instant classic +20-minute excursion.

Phish debuted the Trey Anastasio/Tom Marshall composition on July 16 during the first set of their three-night finale at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, Georgia. The premiere performance clocked in at around seven and half minutes.

It was in Philly, however, that the band gave “The Well’ the Type II treatment, unfurling a jam that traversed wide and varied terrain. Read an excerpt from JamBase’s coverage of “The Well” at The Mann by contributor Aaron Stein.

Once again, [Phish’s] mastery of context and perspective put the second-ever version of “The Well” in the second slot of the second set, Trey once again appropriately referencing “rainbows,” although the post-lyric section was more torrential rain from dark clouds and stark shades of gray than anything resembling color. As with many of the songs debuted this tour, “The Well” seemed ready-made for Jon Fishman’s current drum style which mixes tempo and energy in ways that require an advanced degree in mathematics to decipher. Kuroda turned his lights vertical, giving the stage an almost literal falling-down-a-well feel as the band went scary-but-raging as only they can, off-kilter but somehow still utterly danceable.
The hair-raising improv eventually morphed into a minimalist almost-plinko, Phish working the corners of the canvas with colorful dabs. Where in the past jams like this might have quickly gone to “bliss jam” territory, the quartet these days seems more content to hold off on the happy place and then only barely getting there, as they got into a deep-welled crunch-funk that got spooky and meandering, Trey leading his bandmates to explore just what the new material has in store, uncovering the evil-sounding secrets in real time with the crowd.
