Watch Sinéad O’Connor Sing Pink Floyd’s ‘Mother’ With Roger Waters & Members Of The Band

Irish musician Sinead O’Connor sadly died this week at age 53. Her untimely death was met with tributes from around the world from fellow musicians and beyond.

Sinéad O’Connor was fiercely brave and her talents were immense, but she carried a heavy burden that at times seemed too much to bear. Her recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U” stands out not just for its undeniable beauty but also for its breathtaking honesty.

Every ounce of O’Connor’s being was genuine, bringing her both acclaim and painful rejection. She spoke out when few others would, and her courage in doing so was commendable.

Among the musicians who reacted to O’Connor’s untimely passing was British folk musician and O’Connor’s contemporary, Beth Orton. Orton wrote an impassioned and “furious” response to O’Connor’s death, writing, “Sinéad should have been better taken care of.” Orton’s message went on to state:

“Sinéad O’Connor was a seer and she was paper thin, see through, she should have been held with the [utmost] love and care and respect. She found success and made people money from what tormented her, it was clearly extreme and shocking to find success from doing what came naturally to her. How brutally lonely for someone as in need of love as she was, someone who gave pure love, pure anger and endless forgiveness with all the wisdom and best will in the world.
“Sinéad sang me through losing my mother, she gave me my tears and allowed me to feel a grief I wouldn’t have understood without her honesty and truth. She deserved medals of bravery for her service. I’m glad she got to see some love in the last couple of years, but too little too late to save her health. I hope she finds the peace she was searching for all the way through. Words will now fail me. Thank you dearest hearted brilliant brave women.”

O’Connor’s talent and vulnerability were on display in July 1990 when she participated in Roger Waters‘ concert in Berlin, Germany featuring a performance of Pink Floyd’s album, The Wall. Held near the site where the Berlin Wall had fallen just months before, Waters enlisted an all-star roster of guest artists, including O’Connor, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, Jerry Hall, Scorpions and members of The Band — Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson.

Standing onstage among rock ‘n’ roll legends – Waters, Helm, Danko and Hudson – O’Connor command the attention of an estimated 450,000 people – one of the largest attended concerts on record – with her haunting delivery of “Mother.” Bolstered by Helm and Danko’s harmonies and Hudson’s accordion, O’Connor’s poignant performance reaches a spellbinding climax when she heartbreakingly sings, “Mother will she break my heart.”
