Billy Strings Breaks Out Beatles Covers At Hamburg Venue That Hosted Fab Four

Billy Strings brought a brief summer tour of Europe to Hamburg, Germany on Wednesday night. Hamburg is well known to music fans as the city where The Beatles cut their proverbial teeth and Strings played a venue that was home to a 56-night Beatles run from October 4 – November 30, 1960.

Strings’ third and final August 2023 show in Germany took place at Hamburg’s Grosse Freiheit 36. The guitarist and his band — bassist Royal Masat, fiddler Alex Hargreaves, mandolinist Jarrod Walker and banjoist Billy Failing — played a whopping 26 songs spread across two sets before concluding the night with a pair of rare Beatles covers. The quintet now ends the short overseas adventure with festival slots at Gotenburg’s Way Out West 2023 on Friday and Oslo’s Oyafestivalen 2023 on Saturday.

Last night’s show featured nearly an equal split of covers and originals. 2019’s Home and 2021’s Renewal were each represented by four songs in the Hamburg setlist, while Strings also led his band on “Doin’ Things Right” and “On The Line” off Turmoil & Tinfoil as well as singles “Thirst Mutilator,” “Wargasm” and “California Sober.”

Billy Strings showed off the diversity of artists that influenced him in performing tracks written by Jeff Austin (“Run Down,”) Mother Love Bone (“Crown Of Thorns”), Bill Monroe (“Bluegrass Breakdown”), The Dillards (“There Is A Time” & “Ernest T. Grass”) and Danny Barnes (“Pretty Daughter”) in Hamburg. The guitarist also dug deep into his repertoire in playing Ralph Stanley’s “Let Me Love You One More Time” for the first and only other instance since July 19, 2020 and Dave Evans’ “One Loaf Of Bread” for the first time since last summer’s Hinterland festival.

The Beatles played the venue located at 36 Große Freiheit when it was named the Kaiserkeller. Rory Storm and The Hurricanes featuring Ringo Starr on drums often shared the bill. Strings honored the venue’s legacy by dusting off covers of “Rocky Raccoon” and “And Your Bird Can Sing.” The former was last played on December 8, 2022 with the former previously performed on November 9, 2022.
