Bob Weir & Wolf Bros will revisit their orchestral arrangements of Grateful Dead classics for a one-off show with the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. Set for October 29th at Frost Amphitheater in Stanford, CA, the concert will mark the West Coast debut of Bobby’s symphony project.
Director of Orchestral Studies and Associate Professor of Music at Stanford Paul Phillips will conduct the concert as he guides Weir, Don Was, Jay Lane, and Jeff Chimenti along with The Wolfpack string and horn section and pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless through two 75-minute sets. The Frost Amphitheatre show will mark a full-circle culmination for Weir’s orchestral odyssey, as it was Stanford music professor Giancarlo Aquilanti who first helped the Grateful Dead guitarist translate his compositions for a 2011 one-off show with the Marin Symphony Orchestra.
Skip ahead a little over a decade, and Bobby and his Bros/Pack made the jump to playing a four-night residency with the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. last October. A three-night engagement followed this past February alongside the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, with Bobby now giving his California home a chance to hear the ornate arrangements.
