After canceling its 2023 edition due to permitting issues, organizers of FloydFest have confirmed that the event’s new home of FestivalPark will be ready to welcome attendees July 24th–28th, 2024.
The long-running FloydFest, founded in 2002 in Floyd, VA, was set to make its debut at its new venue in Check, VA. Announced last year, FloydFest producers Across-the-Way Productions and Blue Cow Arts developed the site from scratch with the property’s owners Hill Holler LLC. Unfortunately, in early April organizers revealed that the new site was “not currently viable” for a 2023 festival, and ultimately scrapped the event due to a permitting issue relating to the park’s stormwater drainage plans. However, on August 9th, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality approved Hill Holler LLC’s Stormwater Management Plan for FestivalPark, signaling the last hurdle for the new site to clear.
“This approval comes after we engaged in a very conservative and careful approach to the development of FestivalPark,” said John McBroom, CEO of Across-the-Way Productions (AtWP) and FloydFest and owner of HHLLC. “At great expense, we have protected every wetland habitat on the new site. Though not strictly required by laws and regulations, some of the conservation and preservation steps by Hill Holler are being voluntarily undertaken because it is the right thing to do.”
Underscoring the new site stewards’ commitment to ecological conservation is the parties’ careful consideration of the local environment. One of the primary concerns for AtWP and those involved in FestivalPark’s development was the presence of bog turtles. Even though the closest bog turtle was found 13 years ago approximately two miles upstream from the property, Hill Holler adjusted construction plans and retained biologists to create a Bog Turtle Management Plan and to advise contractors and developers on best management practices to protect the reptilians, if present.
With all of the developmental boxes checked, FloydFest is preparing to unveil its new logo and theme in the coming weeks. Remaining tickets for FloydFest 2024 go on sale on November 1st on the festival website. The festival has made no lineup announcements yet and it is unclear if the event will retain any acts from last year’s scrapped billing. FloydFest 2023 was due to feature headliners The Black Crowes, My Morning Jacket, Sheryl Crow, and Goose.
