The latest installment of the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of Robbie Robertson‘s “Broken Arrow” from Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY on June 13th, 1993.
Taken from The Band guitarist/songwriter’s 1987 self-titled solo debut, this video release comes two weeks after his unfortunate passing at age 80. Both now and in 1993, the Dead honored their former colleague with whom they shared multiple bills throughout the late ’60s and early ’70s, most notably Woodstock, the traveling Festival Express, and of course the historic 1973 Summer Jam concert with the Allman Brothers Band in Watkins Glen, NY.
Bassist Phil Lesh handles lead vocals on this song that maintained a strong presence in the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire in the early-to-mid-’90s winddown of their career. Lesh, who resumed singing in concert back in 1985 following a self-imposed nine-year hiatus, leads the charge valiantly on this song that connects to the band’s deep Americana roots.

“This is a rare near-contemporary hit the Grateful Dead covered, joining ‘Hey Jude’ from 1969 and ‘Werewolves Of London’ in 1978,” Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux writes in the video’s description. “Robbie Robertson wrote the song and included it on his 1987 solo debut album. In 1991, Pop superstar Rod Stewart covered the song, and less than two years after its release, the Grateful Dead started covering it, sung by Phil Lesh. A very welcome addition to the setlist.”
