Five years after releasing her debut album, Mikaela Davis is back with her sophomore offering, And Southern Star, which she produced in collaboration with her touring outfit of the same name.
Comprised of Alex Coté (drums), Cian McCarthy (guitars/vocals), Shane McCarthy (bass/vocals), and Kurt Johnson (steel guitar) in addition to Davis herself on harp and vocals, the band has over a decade of experience playing together, but this is the first time they’ve appeared on a full-length record together.
“I finally feel like this album is more me than anything else that’s been released,” Davis said of the project.
And Southern Star follows Davis’ 2018 debut album Delivery and highlights the maturity the young harpist has found in the intervening years leading her own band on cross-country tours and collaborating with a diverse list of musical dignitaries from Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Circles Around the Sun to Christian McBride, Bon Iver, and Lake Street Dive—not to mention moving out of her hometown of Rochester and dealing with the isolation of the pandemic. The album offers an up-to-date representation the signature sound she has developed since earning a degree in harp performance from the Crane School of Music, showcasing her unique blend of ’60s-inspired psychedelic pop, folk, and rock.

Davis and her band celebrated the release of their album at midnight on Friday while performing at Pickathon in Happy Valley, OR. The set kicked off a run of summer tour dates that will carry the band through the end of the month. She will join The Mountain Goats for a run of October tour dates.
