Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival is taking 2024 off, according to the Florida festival’s producer Insomniac Events. Per a statement to press outlets, 2024 will serve as a “fallow year,” so the festival can return to its “original roots.”
“As owners and safekeepers of our beautiful land, Sunshine Grove, Soundslinger cares deeply about the community that it witnessed come together in those first few years of OMF from 2016 onwards,” Rechulski, founder of Soundslinger which started the festival in 2016 and owns the 800-acre Sunshine Grove property where the event is held, said. “We are working hard to keep OMF close to its original roots in a big way and reignite the sparks. Those formative years were special to all of us. Hang tight and remember to always Be, Here, Now.”
With references to the festival’s “original roots,” organizers could be hinting at a re-diversification of the lineup. Launched in 2016 with a varied roster topped by Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar, Robert Plant, Hall & Oates, and The Avett Brothers, the festival has taken a heavy EDM slant in recent years and in 2020 partnered with Insomniac Events, producers of such megafests as Electric Daisy Carnival. This past iteration of OMF featured headliners Excision, ODESZA, GRiZ, and Baby Keem.
As Okeechobee News points out, the festival has a history of stops and starts. After punting its initial debut from 2015 to 2016, the festival held consecutive editions in 2017 and 2018 before going on a hiatus that lasted until 2020. Remarkably, the festival returned in March 2020, skating just under the wire of the complete live music shutdown as a result of the COVID pandemic. Okeechobee returned again in 2022, followed by this year’s installment and yet another hiatus.
