Gov’t Mule is “On The Run” this summer with its tribute to Pink Floyd‘s The Dark Side of the Moon, and on Saturday brought the show to Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston.
Audiences at the outdoor amphitheater got a double dose of classic rock homages with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening opening the show. After getting the Led out, Warren Haynes led Mule onstage for an extended single set that began with a slew of Mule originals including the classic “Thorazine Shuffle” alongside cuts from the band’s new album Peace…Like A River.
Gov’t Mule’s Pink Floyd song choices were well-solidified at this penultimate stop of the tour, which officially ended Saturday in New Jersey. Of course, the primary focus is given to Floyd’s 1973 masterpiece and one of the most successful albums of all time. Mule even expanded its roster to include guitarist Jackie Greene, saxophonist Ron Holloway, and backing vocalists Sophia Ramos and Machan Taylor—not to mention the band’s new permanent bassist Kevin Scott—to accomplish the work’s ambitious compositions. Alongside Dark Side of the Moon classics, Mule also peppered in favorites from throughout the Floyd catalog including “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I–V)”, “Welcome To The Machine”, an epic set-closing “Echoes”, and a “Wish You Were Here” second encore.
