Quincy Jones’ 90th Birthday Tribute: A Musical Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, July 29th perfectly encapsulated several career highlights of the iconic legend himself. Unfortunately, Jones was not attendance. However, several generations of the fans present at the Bowl felt his powerfully creative spirit through the musical interpretations represented that night on stage.
The biggest stars included Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson and Jones’ goddaughter Patti Austin. Also other notable artists performing included Aloe Blacc, Avery Wilson, Jones protege Jacob Collier and Siedah Garrett. Supporting all the exceptionally talented vocalists were members of Jones’ decades-long house band over the many decades.
They featured music director and keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, David Delhomme on keyboards, and guitar, Paul Jackson, Jr., guitars, Nathan East, bass, John Robinson, drums Kevin Ricard, percussion, along with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra which was masterfully led by conductor Jules Buckley.
The show highlights were numerous, thoroughly satisfying, compelling and often show stopping numbers: Stevie Wonder (“You’ve Got It Bad Girl.”); Patti Austin (“How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”), Jennifer Hudson (“You Don’t Own Me”), Samara Joy (“Misty”), Aloe Blacc (“Fly Me To The Moon”), Avery Wilson (“Thriller”), Jacob Collier (“Human Nature”) and the sensational rendition of “Man In The Mirror” sung by Siedah Garrett who along with Glen Ballard co-wrote the song for Michael Jackson.
Among his multitude of achievements, Quincy Jones has undeniably distinguished himself in literally every aspect of music as a record label executive, arranger, trumpeter, bandleader, musical composer and record producer. In his illustrious and truly multifaceted career, he has worked the greats from Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Count Basie to Frank Sinatra, also Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson.
The Quincy Jones’ 90th Birthday Tribute: A Musical Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl is a significant reminder of the above works and accolades of a lifetime.
This was night two of the celebration with the prior night also having a cavalcade of amazing performers including Angelique Kidjo and John Legend.
