Drummer Joe Russo has been tapped to curate a concert series dubbed “This Is Gonna Be A Blast” at Brooklyn venue The Sultan Room. Russo will be joined by longtime collaborators keyboardist Marco Benevento, guitarist Brad Barr and fellow drummer Andrew Barr for the initial installments on Thursday, October 5 and Friday, October 6.
The Joe Russo’s Almost Dead namesake has history with Benevento that predates their time in the tribute act as they toured extensively and put out four studio albums as the Benevento/Russo Duo from 2001 through 2009. Brad and Andrew Barr co-founded The Slip with bassist Marc Friedman and went on to form The Barr Brothers. While Brad was a frequent guest of The Duo’s, Andrew served as Marco’s drummer in the Marco Benevento Trio between 2006 and 2011.
“Beyond thrilled to announce a new series and it’s first collaborators! ‘This Is Gonna Be A Blast VOL 1’ feat Andrew Barr, Brad Barr, Marco Benevento & Joe Russo,” wrote Russo on Instagram. “TWO nights of improvisation with some of my oldest and bestest pals and musical heroes.”
“We’re counting the days ‘til this happens,” added The Barr Brothers. “Two nights of improvised music with two of our nearest and dearest friends.”
