The Lumineers tipped their caps to an American master last week during a stop in Maine with a tribute to the late Tom Petty.
During their show at Maine Savings Amphitheater with openers Band of Horses, the headlining indie-folkers covered Petty’s “Walls (Circus)”. The lesser-loved Petty and The Heartbreakers original comes from the band’s soundtrack to the 1996 film She’s the One. While it doesn’t have the brand recognition of Petty’s many other hits, the feel-good singalong still hits the same emotional sweet spot as so many of his more memorable compositions.
The Lumineers frequently cover “Walls” live, with Setlist.fm recording 31 performances in 2022, however, this marked only the song’s second appearance this year. Elsewhere in the show, The Lumineers snuck a snippet of The Rolling Stones‘ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” into their own “Leader of the Landslide”.
