As devastating wildfires rage across the Hawaiian island of Maui, The String Cheese Incident looked back on better days with an archival clip of “Mouna Bowa”. Recorded live on February 17th, 2002 in Maui, the Colorado jamgrass outfit shared the previously unreleased clip with a fundraiser for wildfire relief efforts.
Performed at the Lahaina Civic Center Outdoor Stage, this marked Cheese’s maiden—and to date only—voyage to Hawaii. With a two-night stay, the band made the trek over the ocean worth it and even brought Keller Williams along for the ride. Coming out of an opening sequence of “¡BAM!” and “On the Road”, SCI transitioned into this Jean-Luc Ponty cover which, despite being written by a French jazz violinist, carries a distinct island flavor. Given that this is a fiddle tune, multi-instrumentalist Michael Kang shines as the nubile band fills in the vast sonic spaces with exotic rhythms.
“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the devastating wildfires in Maui,” the band wrote along with the video. “We have very fond memories of past Incidents in Hawaii, including our two-night run at the Lahaina Civic Center back in 2002. We dug up some unreleased footage from one of those nights, and we encourage everyone who is able to donate to the Hawai’i Community Foundation, where 100% of proceeds are going directly to the recovery efforts and victims of the Maui fires.”
