The Wallflowers Dust Off The Band Covers In Honor Of Robbie Robertson

The Wallflowers mastermind Jakob Dylan is the son of Bob Dylan, who had a long and storied history of recording and performing with The Band. So it was fitting The Wallflowers paid tribute to Robbie Robertson last night in Kent, Ohio a day after news of The Band guitarist’s death was announced.

Bob Dylan recruited Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel to back him in the mid-1960s when they were known as the Hawks. They then left Dylan’s employ and changed their name to The Band. In 1973 they rejoined Dylan to record Planet Waves and embarked on a joint 1974 tour together.

Robbie Robertson’s death left Garth Hudson as the sole surviving member of The Band. Jakob Dylan pointed out that fact at the beginning of The Wallflowers’ encore at Kent Stage on Thursday night after having the crowd salute Robbie Robertson. The Wallflowers performed two classic The Band songs — “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “The Weight” — before covering Tom Petty’s “American Girl” and “The Waiting” and playing their own hit single “The Difference” to close their visit to Kent, Ohio.

The Band covers came after a 17-song main set that was heavy on material from The Wallflowers’ latest album, 2021’s Exit Wounds. “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” was last played on August 24, 2018 while “The Weight” had been shelved since April 5, 2013 as per Setlist.FM.
