As the live music community continues reeling from the passing of James Casey this week, tributes continue to pour in including a new one from Umphrey’s McGee. The prog-jam act looked back on the Trey Anastasio Band saxophonist’s sit-in on “It Doesn’t Matter” from 2019.
Recorded live at The Fillmore in Philadelphia on November 2nd, Casey emerged with the band to start off set two. With the added horn, Umphrey’s launched into a deep jam accentuated by Casey’s presence. James was on hand for the show following a special Star Kitchen opening set with the saxophonist featured throughout. Star Kitchen drummer Marlon Lewis also appeared with UM at the end of the first set for the band’s first take on Rage Against The Machine‘s “Bombtrack” in three years.
“We are extremely saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend, James Casey,” the band wrote in the video’s description. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, bandmates, and anyone who has been moved, inspired, or danced to his music. 
We share this video of his 2019 sit-in to celebrate his life and the joy brought to any stage he took.”

James Michael Casey passed away on Monday at the age of 40 following a two-year battle with colon cancer. His extensive musical resume included work with everyone from Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann‘s Billy & The Kids supergroup to pop singer Meghan Trainor. But he is perhaps best known for his years of work with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio’s solo band, rounding out a horn trio with Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman and providing a sound as powerful as the man behind it was gentle.
