Brandi Carlile continued her 2023 tour on Tuesday with a concert at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand featuring Wynonna Judd as support. Carlile joined Wynonna for two The Judds songs during Judd’s opening set before Wynonna returned the favor by sitting in on two additional Judds tunes and a Cher cover as part of Brandi’s set.
Wynonna kicked off the evening with a set that saw Brandi Carlile emerge to help sing “Cry Myself To Sleep” and “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Old Days).” Carlile stepped up last year to help Wynonna move forward with The Judds: The Final Tour after the tragic death of her mother and musical partner Naomi Judd. Both “Cry Myself To Sleep” and “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Old Days)” were released by The Judds on 1986’s Rockin’ With The Rhythm and each peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
Brandi Carlile delivered a 21-song performance at the venue in Falcon Heights, Michigan last night. The setlist was heavy on songs from her most recent album, 2021’s In These Silent Days, and also included a smattering of classics and a handful of choice covers as well as three tunes off her Grammy-winning 2018 LP By The Way, I Forgive You.
Carlile’s first guest was her wife Catherine Shepherd Carlile who contributed to oldie “I Belong To You” and a cover of Indigo Girls’ “Closer To Fine” the couple recorded for the Barbie soundtrack. Wynonna came out a few songs later for the pairing of chart-toppers “Girls Night Out” and “Love Is Alive” off The Judds’ 1984 album Why Not Me. Brandi Carlile informed the crowd her first three concerts were Judds shows held at the Washington State Fair.
Wynonna was back on stage following Carlile’s performance of SmallTown Strings’ “Dream Again” to start last night’s encore. Judd and Carlile shared vocal duties on Cher’s 1989 smash “If I Could Turn Back Time.” The duo previously performed the song at the 2020 and 2023 installments of Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend destination event. Carlile went on to finish the show by leading her band through a medley of Wings’ “Live And Let Die” and “We Are The Champions” by Queen.
