For those who made it through the seven-show Phish residency at Madison Square Garden last weekend, Eggy was the Cutting Room to usher them across the finish line. At the ever-rising Connecticut jam quartet’s second sold-out Cutting Room Phish after-party in less than a year’s time, Eggy dusted off a cover of Little Feat‘s “Skin It Back” for the first time in almost four years.
“Skin It Back” arrived early on in a highlight-filled single-set performance. Drummer Alex Bailey handled lead vocals on this one, though with an Eggy cover you never know who’s going to take it, as the band’s four members are all equally capable singers. The quartet dug into the swamp rock influences that have infiltrated its stylistic palette as much as any Northeast jam band, with Dani Battat‘s swirling organ serving as a springboard for improvisation. Eggy last performed the Feats Don’t Fail Me Now classic on November 3rd, 2019, per The Carton.
Even though Eggy chewed on this “Skin It Back” for nearly ten minutes before wrapping it up, the band still wasn’t finished with it. Throughout the show, during jams on “Shadow” and Chuck Berry‘s “Let It Rock”, the band included teases of the central “Skin It Back” riff. Other highlights included a pair of debuts including new original “A Moments Notice” and a cover of Paul McCartney‘s “Coming Up”.
Another non-musical highlight of the show was Eggy’s onstage announcement that the band will return to NYC on November 18th to headline Brooklyn Bowl. The concert will mark Eggy’s largest headlining show to date, clearing yet another hurdle on the band’s ascension through the ranks.
Along with the Brooklyn Bowl show, Eggy last week announced (through the conventional channels) a string of new fall tour dates. In addition to the new dates, which are on sale now via the band’s website, Eggy recently sample platter featuring selects from the band’s spring tour.
