On August 17 King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard brought their current tour of Europe to Saint-Malo, France for a set at the La Route Du Rock festival. The 10-song, 90-minute performance was filmed by European public service television station ARTE with the resulting footage shared on the ARTE Concert YouTube channel.

The Australian rock band focused on material from three albums released since 2022. King Gizzard also fit in two songs off 2016’s Nonagon Infinity and a tune featured on 2019’s Infest The Rats’ Nest.

The sextet opened with the long and sprawling “The Dripping Tap,” the lead single from 2022’s Omnium Gatherum. King Gizzard’s impressive improvisational skills were also on display within the 10-minute “Iron Lung” and 14-minute “Evil Devil Roll” that followed. The former is featured on Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms & Lava, one of three albums released last October, while a studio version of the latter can be found on Nonagon Infinity.

The ensuing “Ice V” saw Stu Mackenzie and Ambrose Kenny-Smith share vocal duties. Mackenzie, Cook Craig and Joey Walker unleashed fretboard fireworks galore including plenty of dual leads on the Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms & Lava track. King Gizz then took a trip to “Magenta Mountain” with Stu building his guitar solo to a massive peak.

Ambrose Kenny-Smith strolled center stage next in rapping “The Grim Reaper” while Mackenzie played flute. The evening’s third and final song from Omnium Gatherum included “Intergalactic” (Beastie Boys) quotes. King Gizzard then treated French fans to the bombastic Infest The Rats’ Nest cuts “Mars For The Rich” and “Planet B” before keeping the metal flowing with the pairing of “Supercell” and “Gila Monster” to close the set. Both songs come from the band’s latest album, the “heavy as fuck” PetroDragonic Apocalypse, which arrived back in June.
