Singer-songwriter Margo Price made her Kennedy Center debut on Friday, August 11 with an acoustic set in which she was joined by her husband Jeremy Ivey. Margo Price used the occasion to trot out new and rare material and closed out the 12-song performance with a The Band cover in tribute to Robbie Robertson.

Price kicked off the set with “Hands Of Time,” the closest to a staple she wound up playing all night. The track from her critically-acclaimed debut album, 2016’s Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, was followed by new original “Malibu.” Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey wrote the song with Mike Campbell while recording at Jonathan Wilson‘s studios in Topanga Canyon as a wildfire broke out.

The acoustic duo performance continued with “1-800 Jesus,” a song Price recorded for an unreleased “psychedelic gospel record” in 2017. Margo previously played “1-800-JESUS” on Sound Opinions in 2018 but then shelved the tune. Next, Ivey led the pair on his own “The Dream And The Dreamer” before Margo helmed takes on the Steven Knudson-penned gem “It’s Not Drunk Driving If You’re Riding A Horse” and Ivey’s “Revelations.” The duo went to to play “Been To The Mountain” off Price’s latest studio album, Strays, the lone cut from the LP to make the setlist.

Margo Price told the story of wanting to play Joni Mitchell’s version of “The Crow On The Cradle” in the wake of the Covenant School shooting in Nashville. However, she was advised it was “too dark” by Emmylou Harris. Price finally covered the song written by Englishman Sydney Carter at the Kennedy Center. Ivey accompanied his wife on 12-string guitar. From there the pair performed the traditional “Silver Dagger” and new tune “Your Memory Is Out Tonight.”

Price picked up a dulcimer she received for her 40th birthday for the final two songs of the set. Margo and Jeremy played the “half-written” new song “Metal Bird” and then ended the hour-long performance with The Band’s “Evangeline” in tribute to Robbie Robertson.
