Watch Phil Lesh Bring A ‘Broken Arrow’ To 1993 Grateful Dead Concert

The Grateful Dead shared pro-shot video of their cover of Robbie Robertson’s “Broken Arrow,” lead by bassist Phil Lesh. The latest All The Years Live footage is from GD’s June 13, 1993 concert at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, New York near Buffalo.

Robbie Robertson, who sadly died on August 9, included “Broken Arrow” on his 1987 self-titled solo debut album. Rod Stewart had a hit with the song in 1991, as Dead archivist David Lemieux noted:

“This is a rare near-contemporary hit the Grateful Dead covered, joining Hey Jude from 1969 and Werewolves Of London in 1978. Robbie Robertson wrote the song and included it on his 1987 solo debut album. In 1991, Pop superstar Rod Stewart covered the song, and less than two years after its release, the Grateful Dead started covering it, sung by Phil Lesh. A very welcome addition to the setlist.”

The Grateful Dead debuted “Broken Arrow” on February 23, 1993 at the Oakland Coliseum. The song immediately went into heavy rotation with the Orchard Park ‘93 version marking its 11th play in less than four months — evidenced in the tight rendition with a stellar vocal performance from Lesh and locked in backing harmonies from Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir.
