The Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994. The legendary group’s The Last Waltz collaborator Eric Clapton gave their induction speech and also joined The Band’s Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson — Richard Manuel sadly died in 1986 and Levon Helm famously did not appear — for a performance of Music From Big Pink classic “The Weight.”
In honor of Robbie Robertson, who passed away on August 9, JamBase takes a look at the memorable 1994 award ceremony.
The 1994 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class was impressive, even for Rock Hall standards. Along with The Band, inductees included John Lennon, the Grateful Dead, Elton John, Bob Marley, Rod Stewart, The Animals and rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Duane Eddy.
Memorable moments included Paul McCartney’s heartfelt speech inducting John Lennon, Bruce Hornsby inducting the Grateful Dead and the aforementioned performance of “The Weight.” The reunion marked the last time The Band’s Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson performed together.
