Bob Dylan will revisit his inaugural trip to Japan with an expanded box set building on his 1978 live album Bob Dylan at Budokan. Dubbed The Complete Budokan 1978, the reissue is out on November 17th and features two full concerts.
Recorded on February 28th and March 1st, 1978 at the famed Nippon Budokan Hall, the inflated re-release will include both concerts in their entirety. This box set will mark the first official release of any full concerts from Dylan’s 1978 world tour. The original Bob Dylan at Budokan, which was initially only available in Japan before massive demand necessitated a worldwide release in 1979, only contained highlights from across two nights.
The Complete Budokan will arrive in a variety of formats and, in keeping with the original release’s exclusivity, the most lavish 8LP box set will only be available in Japan. The equivalent 4CD release, available worldwide, will contain the same 58 tracks, 36 of them previously unreleased. For those seeking a less exhaustive package, the singer-songwriter will also issue a 2LP highlight edition Bob Dylan – Another Budokan 1978 featuring 16 previously unreleased tracks.
“The completed album documents the remarkable sound of the legendary Budokan shows that are forever etched in history,” Heckel Sugano, the CBS Sony product manager for Bob Dylan in Japan at the time of the recordings, said. “We tried to faithfully reproduce the sound the Japanese audience would have heard in the concert hall.”

Along with the announcement, Dylan shared a live recording of “The Man In Me”, recorded at the March 1st show. Dylan actually played eight nights at the famed Tokyo venue, however, only the two were recorded on 24-channel multi-track tape.
“We mixed the record with the keyword ‘passion’ in mind,” chief engineer Tom Suzuki added. “The result is a mix that surpasses the original 1978 release, providing a crisper and clearer sound where each instrument and Bob Dylan’s voice are distinctly audible.”
