Jimmy Buffett’s Daughter Delaney Buffett Shares Moving Tribute To Her Father

Jimmy Buffett, who died last week at age 76, wrote a song called “Son Of A Son Of A Sailor,” which the singer-songwriter literally was as his grandfather James Delaney Buffett and father James Delaney Buffett Jr. were both at home on the sea. Jimmy Buffett not only honored his grandpa and dad in song, but he carried on the tradition of the “Delaney” middle name when his daughter Sarah Delaney Buffett was born in 1992.

Known professionally as Delaney Buffett, her mother is Jimmy’s longtime wife Jane Slagsvol Buffett. Delaney is an accomplished filmmaker whose credits include documentaries, feature films and television series. Delaney also worked with her dad on the 2020 Songs You Don’t Know By Heart video series documenting Jimmy’s lesser-known songs, including the autobiographical “Delaney Talks to Statues” (see below).

In response to her father’s death, which was revealed to have come after a four-year-long battle with Merkel cell skin cancer, Delaney wrote a beautiful tribute to her father that she posted on Instagram.

“He told us not to be sad or scared, but to keep the party going,” Delaney said of her father. “And as much as I’d like to use that as an excuse to drink myself into an oblivion worthy of his literary heroes, I know it’s not what he meant. Yes, he loved his weed and his wine, but the truth is, most of the time, he was just high on life, and that is what he wanted for everyone: to enjoy the fantastic trip that life can be.”

Delaney went on to describe her close relationship with her father and his positive influence on her life. She also thanked all of the medical professionals who cared for her father over the years. Along with Delaney and his widow Jane, Jimmy Buffett is also survived by his daughter Savannah Buffett and son Cameron Buffett.
