A previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix Experience cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor” is now available to stream. The track is set to land on the forthcoming live album, Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967, due out on November 10 in vinyl, CD and digital formats.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s August 18, 1967 performance at the Hollywood Bowl saw the band opening for The Mamas & The Papas. Although Jimi Hendrix had won praise from the likes of Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck in the UK and had recently delivered his iconic performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, U.S. audiences had still not gone all in on the guitarist. Furthemore, the Jimi Hendrix Experience — Jimi, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell — wouldn’t release their landmark debut album, Are You Experienced, until five days after their Hollywood Bowl appearance.

Longtime Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray attended the concert at the Bowl and was 12 years old at the time. He recalled seeing the Jimi Hendrix Experience in a short film documenting the formative time titled Monterey Pop To The Hollywood Bowl.

“The audience was there to see The Mamas & The Papas. They haven’t heard of Jimi Hendrix. I’d never heard of Jimi Hendrix, and he couldn’t be more opposite of The Mamas & The Papas as an act, culturally, physically, in every possible way he was the opposite. Here comes this guy and there’s only three of them on stage and they have these afros and these wild, ornate, very theatrical clothes. Jimi proceeds to shred, and it’s loud but it’s musical, and then it becomes so physical. He starts playing the guitar under his leg, and now it’s behind his back, and now he’s playing it with his mouth, and now he’s on the ground on his knees and he’s like humping it, and it, to me was mind blowing. It was sort of every human characteristic; it was beauty, grace, it was sexual, violent, gentle, it was just everything all at once in one band coming out of this one guy. I wouldn’t say that the audience response was quite the same as the response I was having. My sister and I were going bananas, and the audience was like [soft clapping] and they were trying to figure it out.”

The Experience Hendrix team, Jimi Hendrix’s longtime engineer Eddie Kramer along with Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix and John McDermott, prepped the previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967. Multiple Grammy-winner Bernie Grundman mastered the record.

The live album contains scorching versions of now iconic songs like “Purple Haze,” “The Wind Cries Mary” and the yet-to-be-released “Foxey Lady” and “Fire.” Jimi and the band also covered The Beatles (“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”), Bob Dylan (“Like a Rolling Stone”), The Troggs (“Wild Thing”), Muddy Waters (“Catfish Blues”) and Howlin’ Wolf (“Killing Floor”).
