Lukas Nelson made the rounds at the last two stops of Willie Nelson‘s Outlaw Music Festival tour. The guitarist/vocalist sat-in for a tune with The String Cheese Incident on Saturday, September 9 in Charlotte and then accompanied Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros for their set closer on Sunday, September 10 in Franklin, Tennessee.

The Outlaw Music Festival pulled into Charlotte’s PNC Music Pavilion on Saturday boasting a lineup that featured Willie Nelson & Family, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The String Cheese Incident, Los Lobos and Waylon Payne. Cheese kicked off their frame with oldies “Sometimes A River,” “Little Hands” and “Best Feeling” ahead of “One More Time” from their new album Lend Me A Hand. Lukas Nelson, who is performing as part of the tour in his father Willie Nelson’s band, came out towards the end of SCI’s set to add to a cover of Bob Marley’s “Stop That Train.”

Originally written by Bob Marley and released by Bob Marley & The Wailers on the 1973 album Catch A Fire, “Stop That Train” was the fifth of seven songs The String Cheese Incident played in Charlotte. “This is a dream come true, we don’t do a lot of things with other bands,” SCI’s Michael Kang told the crowd after introducing Lukas Nelson. “So it’s a real treat to get to do this and play for you all and be here to celebrate the 90 amazing years of Willie Nelson and his entire legacy and his songbook and everything. So, we really want to thank you guys for having us.”

The String Cheese Incident then launched into “Stop That Train” augmented by Lukas Nelson on vocals and guitar. Lukas took a triumphant guitar solo amid the cover. Nelson also sang lead on the final verse in addition to providing harmonies on the choruses. SCI coupled staples “BollyMunster” and “Colorado Bluebird Sky” to end the set.

Last night, the Outlaw Music Festival tour moved on to FirstBank Amphitheater in Franklin, Tennessee, where Willie Nelson & Family were joined on the bill by Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack, Los Lobos and Waylon Payne. Weir, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, pedal steel Barry Sless and The Wolfpack horn and string section brought out Lukas Nelson for their “Not Fade Away” finale in Tennessee.

Weir and his ensemble loaded their set in Franklin with such Grateful Dead classics as “Jack Straw,” “Estimated Prophet,” “China Cat Sunflower,” “Black Peter” and the geographically-appropriate “Tennessee Jed.” The group also fit in covers of Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” the traditional “I Know You Rider” and Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.”

Lukas Nelson emerged for “Not Fade Away” and engaged with Weir in call-and-response on both the vocals and instrumentally. Watch audience-shot footage of last night’s “NFA” below:
