Ms. Lauryn Hill’s headlining set at the 2023 Global Citizen’s Festival this past weekend turned into a surprise Fugees reunion. The event took place on the Great Lawn in New York City’s Central Park on Saturday, September 23.

Global Citizen is a social action platform that endeavors to call attention to the world’s biggest challenges including the climate crisis, equity for women and girls, the global hunger crisis and extreme poverty. The Global Citizens Festival brings together prominent figures in entertainment to perform and highlight Global Citizen’s cause. Performers at the 2023 event included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jung Kook, Anitta and Ms. Lauryn Hill among others.

Ms. Lauryn Hill’s set at Global Citizens Festival came in the midst of the 25th anniversary of her highly influential and widely acclaimed 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The singer-songwriter and rapper kicked off her set at Global Citizens Festival with the album’s “Everything Is Everything.” Hill also performed the LP’s, “Final Hour,” “Lost Ones,” “Ex-Factor,” “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” and the record’s No. 1 hit, “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

Hill then surprised the Global Citizens audience by welcoming her Fugees bandmates Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel. While the legendary hip-hop group is co-headliner on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour they were not included on the Global Citizens Festival bill. Fugees have performed together just twice in the past two years at The Roots Picnic in June and in 2021 for a Global Citizen event in NYC.

The New Jersey-born group kicked things off with a raccous performance of “How Many Mics,” off their own critically acclaimed and highly influential album, The Score. The trio also offered additional favorites from the 1996 LP including “Ready Or Not,” “Killing Me Softly” and “Fu-Gee-La” to wrap the set.
