Oteil Burbridge has been leading an all-star band on tour in support of his new album of Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter ballads, Lovely View of Heaven, and on Saturday the band stopped at the hallowed Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY for one of the most highly anticipated shows of the run.
Having played host to an array of Dead-related projects beginning with the Grateful Dead themselves back in 1970, The Cap was the perfect backdrop for an evening of collaborative improvisation featuring Jason Crosby, Duane Betts, Steve and John Kimock, Melvin Seals, Tom Guarna, and Lamar Williams Jr.
Unlike the shows Oteil played with Dead & Company, the setlists have remained relatively stable during the tour. Opening with Dr. Lonnie Smith‘s “Play It Back” just as they did the night before in Providence, the band played an eclectic setlist comprised largely of covers from the Jerry Garcia Band and Allman Brothers Band songbook, of which Oteil was a longtime member alongside Duane Betts’ father Dickey Betts, plus originals from both Burbridge and Betts. The band also revisited “Friend of the Lithium Devil”—Jason Crosby’s mashup of the Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” and Nirvana‘s “Lithium”—which has been a staple of the tour.
