While the band didn’t go as far as Roger Waters‘ The Dark Side of the Moon Redux, Pearl Jam put its own spin on “Brain Damage” on Saturday. The cover of the Pink Floyd classic marked PJ’s first in ten years.
Pearl Jam’s Saturday show at St. Paul, MN’s Excel Energy Center marked the second concert of a two-show engagement which began on Thursday. Prior to August 31st, the grunge rockers hadn’t performed live since September 22nd, 2022. In observance of the occasion, which also arrived just days ahead of the 32 anniversary of the band’s debut album Ten, fans began lining up outside the Excel Center a full two days before Thursday’s show.
The devoted masses who returned for Saturday’s concert were rewarded with a number of surprises, including the Pink Floyd cover. Frontman Eddie Vedder began “Brain Damage” solo on guitar, only for tens of thousands of fans to chime in with the familiar lyrics. Rather than performing the full song, after the first verse Vedder made a smooth transition into “I Am Mine” with the rest of the band joining in behind him.
Elsewhere in the set, Pearl Jam also honored another classic rock favorite with a snippet of The Rolling Stones‘ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” tacked onto “Who Ever Said”. The band also dusted off a few other original rarities throughout the show including “Severed Hand” and “Got Some”, both played for the first time since 2018.
