While Pearl Jam went seven years between their last two studio albums, 2013’s Lightning Bolt and 2020’s Gigaton, it appears the wait until the next one won’t be quite as long. Guitarist Mike McCready discussed Pearl Jam’s forthcoming 12th studio album in new interviews with Spin and Guitar World.
“It’s just about finished,” McCready told Guitar World of the new Andrew Watt-produced record. “I think there’s a few tweaks here and there that have to happen, and we’re probably not going to have anything out this year. But Andrew Watt brought an energy and a youthfulness and a great ear to us that I think we needed.”
Watt was behind the board for Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder‘s latest solo effort, 2022’s Earthling. The New York City native also produced albums for Ozzy Osbourne, Justin Bieber, Iggy Pop and co-helmed The Rolling Stones’ new Hackney Diamonds LP.
Mike McCready was thrilled to work with Andrew Watt and is “so excited” about the upcoming album. “He brings this very positive energy and knows how to get really good sounds,” the guitarist said to Spin. “At the same time, his energy kind of kicked us in our asses a little bit. He would be like ‘Come on, dude,’ you know? He is kind of yelling and jumping up and down a lot and being happy. He’s a fan, but he has great structure ideas, great sound ideas, and song ideas. I’m so excited about what he did with us.”
McCready shouted out drummer Matt Cameron in both interviews. “Matt Cameron’s playing better than I’ve ever heard him in a long time,” Mike McCready mentioned to Guitar World. “I mean, of course I’ve heard him with Soundgarden and of course he’s incredible and always has been. But he’s playing more like that now – he’s kinda loose. Andrew pushed him to play however he wanted to play. How Matt’s playing on this record has made it amazing in my mind.”
“The record’s gonna have some great examples of Matt Cameron’s drumming that just blew my mind,” the Seattle-based musician added to Spin. “He took it up about 10 notches for this new record, and it really is because of Andrew’s enthusiasm, and, again, him jumping up and down and saying ‘Try it again!’ and then saying ‘Oh, we got it!’ and on to the next thing.”
Pearl Jam postponed Sunday’s concert in Noblesville, Indiana last Sunday, September 10. The band is expected to resume their current U.S. tour tonight in Fort Worth, Texas.
