Phish started a four-night run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, on Thursday, kicking off their annual Labor Day Weekend residency at the professional soccer stadium just outside Denver.
Typically, the traveling portion of Phish summer tour ends a few weeks before Labor Day Weekend when the band then reconvenes for a finale at Dick’s. This year’s return to Dick’s was a bit different than past years due to Phish playing a pair of shows last weekend at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, New York that raised over $3.5 million for flood recovery efforts in Vermont and Upstate New York. The SPAC shows were notable not just for their timing and fundraising, but also for the spectacular sit-in by guest guitarist Derek Trucks for much of the second set of the second night.
With SPAC and the rest of an impressive summer of shows leading up to the run at Dicks, the band took the stage Thursday night in Colorado and commenced an annual gathering going strong since 2011 (save for a COVID canceled 2020).
“Welcome, welcome,” guitarist Trey Anastasio said after he and his bandmates took the stage, adding, “This one’s for Frenchie.”
Trey’s dedication was for Tim “Frenchie” Gazaille, the the “naked dude” who ran around during a weather delay at Dick’s last year. Frenchie, who was characterized during the most recent New Year’s Eve gag at Madison Square Garden, sadly died earlier this year.
Phish then lit into “Carini,” whose lyrics reference a “naked dude,” to open the show. A gentle, gliding jam spouted from the opener. Trey conjured a melodic riff that fostered a response from Page McConnell’s piano and the pair were engaged in a musical conversation. At around the 15-minute mark, the jam shifted to an angular approach, chopped up by drummer Jon Fishman’s shifting rhythm and bassist Mike Gordon’s meaty low end.
Pretty special of Phish to open the show with Carini and for Trey to dedicate it to Frenchie (this is the band’s first show in Colorado since he passed away). https://t.co/iWHDdfiXog

The compelling 20-minute opener and jam was followed by a short and sweet run through “Halley’s Comet.” A celebratory “Blaze On” came charging in next, and featured Trey altering the lyrics to mention Dick’s and then a punchy, concise jam.
Making its fourth first set appearance of the summer, “Prince Caspian” flowed into a cool little jam that had the four musicians onstage engaged in a collective progression that drew to succinct conclusion.
The first “We Are Come To Outlive Our Brains” since 2021 came next and the chilled out offering of the Kasvot Växt tune was stabilized by Page setting an airy vibe with his Wurlitzer electric piano. “Mercury” then made its second setlist of the summer and stayed within its confines, not branching out beyond its structure.
“Ruby Waves” came crashing in after and saw Page adding some cool Moog sounds while Trey sang the lyrics. Phish kicked into an intense jam, spirited and sprawling with momentum, navigating together with an apparent ease under the responsive and impressive moving lights controlled by Chris Kuroda. The jam’s second act upped the intensity and careened into a pulsating and frenzied apex before winding down and returning to the song’s theme for its conclusion.
The first of eight sets that will be played at Dick’s this weekend came to rocking ending with “Character Zero” ushering in the evening’s set break.

Set 1: Carini > Halley’s Comet > Blaze On [1], Prince Caspian, We Are Come to Outlive Our Brains, Mercury > Ruby Waves > Character Zero Set 2: Set Your Soul Free, Tweezer > Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1, Oblivion > Light > Slave to the Traffic Light Encore: Show of Life, Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S. Trey dedicated Carini to Frenchie (Tim Gazaille), a fan who had passed away earlier in the year and was the “naked guy” during the rain delay at Dick’s the previous summer. Trey teased San-Ho-Zay in Halley’s Comet. Blaze On’s lyrics were changed to “we’ll be dancing here at Dick’s.” We Are Come To Outlive Our Brains was performed for the first time since August 6, 2021 (109 shows). | |

“Set Your Soul Free” setup the start of the second set with a straightforward offering of the positivity-spreading opener. It was then time for “Tweezer” to enter the fray and with it came a flowing, linear improvisation that was a showcase of the balanced approach the band has become so effortlessly adept at cultivating. Fish’s dynamic fills and Mike’s steadily evolving bass lines bolstered Page’s piano highlights and Trey’s tastefully aggressive riffing.
After several successful passages, the effects began to layer in, forming a sonic otherworldliness that teetered on the edge of falling apart. Within the wash of sound emerged a piercing melodic line introduced by Trey that brought the jam back into a singular focus.
While it seemed like there might be more in store for the “Tweezer” jam, instead Trey prompted a transition into “Beneath A Sea Of Stars Part 1.” Trey wailed with sorrowful, achingly haunted swells out of his Languedoc, piercing through with an arresting tone and staggering impact.
One of the standouts of the many new originals debuted earlier this summer, “Oblivion” showed up for the fifth time and made another impactful contribution to the second set. A compact but engaging jam was tacked onto the newcomer, providing some of the most “go back and listen to again” moments of the night.
The feel of the “Oblivion” jam carried over when they got back to improvising out of the subsequent “Light.” The four musicians were locked into a sharply focused jam, maneuvering with purpose and conviction for several satisfying minutes.
Putting a poignant stamp on the end of the set, “Slave To The Traffic Light” filled a familiar set closing role. The 39-year-old song holding strong as ever.
This summer has had plenty of exceptional encores going back to the tour opener, and Dick’s has also been the site of many memorable finales as well. Thursday’s encore was the reflective “Show Of Life” and the intergalactic “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.,” rounding out the setlist absent any covers.
