The Breeders dug into their archives for a version of Last Splash single “Divine Hammer” sung by Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis. The never before heard take is one of two previously unreleased tracks included on Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition), which arrives this Friday, September 22 via 4AD.
Last Splash, The Breeders’ sophomore studio album, was originally released in August of 1993. The 15-track LP features the band’s classic lineup of Kim Deal (vocals, guitar), Kelley Deal (guitar, vocals), Josephine Wiggs (bass, vocals) and Jim Macpherson (drums, vocals). The Breeders are currently on tour, where they are performing Last Splash in its entirety at each headlining stop for the remainder of the year.
The Breeders’ Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition) reissue consists of the album remastered from the original analog tapes accompanied by two previously unreleased tracks. In addition to the “Divine Hammer” outtake dubbed “Divine Mascis,” the set also includes “Go Man Go,” a cut Kim Deal co-wrote with former Pixies bandmate Black Francis.
Kelley Deal explained to Uncut how the Mascis version came together, stating:
“At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’ But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I like his voice and the idiosyncratic way he sings and delivers lines. So I thought it was really neat.”
