With the band’s indefinite hiatus rapidly approaching, Twiddle gathered fans in central New York’s Apple Valley for one last Tumble Down festival, at least for now.
Making its debut at the new Wonderland Forest at Apple Valley on Friday, September 22nd and Saturday, September 23rd, the festival kicked off with a set from Long-Island progressive funk trio Baked Shrimp and two sets from New Jersey-based quintet Dogs in a Pile. Andy Frasco & The U.N. then got the audience amped ahead of Twiddle’s first two headlining sets of the weekend, which opened appropriately with “Blueberry Tumble” and included both a set of classic fan favorites from throughout the band’s catalog and a set of just four tunes expanded with lengthy improvised jams. The jammier second set included a guest appearance by Andy Frasco, who proved his stamina during “Mamunes the Faun”.
Saturday opened with a set from Mike Powell, who welcomed Twiddle’s own Mihali Savoulidis to sit in. Dopapod then got things started over on the main stage, followed by a solo looping set from Mihali with sit-ins from Mike Oehmen on saxophone and Twiddle’s Zdenek Gubb on bass. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong played a guest-filled set with appearances by Lotus guitarist Tim Palmieri and Dopapod keyboardist Eli Winderman, which set the stage for two more sets of Twiddle.
The band once again treated fans to a set of fan favorites including “Orlando’s”, “Apples”, “Cabbage Face”, “Syncopated Healing”, and “Lost in the Cold” in the first set, and then got loose during set two, which featured a surprise appearance by Tim Palmieri on the instrumental “Latin Tang”. A rockin’ “Slippin in the Kitchen” featuring PPPP guitarist Jeremy Schon capped off the set before The Breakfast (featuring Twiddle drummer Adrian Tramontano) closed out the fest.
Only seven shows remain on Twiddle’s Distance Makes The Heart farewell tour before the band begins its indefinite hiatus, including shows with Yam Yam in Providence, RI (10/5) and Hampton Beach, NH (10/6), a show in Burlington, VT (10/7) one in Denver with Melt (11/11), and finally the band’s annual three-night Frendsgiving celebration at The Capitol Theatre with Kitchen Dwellers.
