The Outlaw Music Festival tour rolled into Simpsonville, South Carolina last night, where headliner Willie Nelson welcomed Bob Weir for a few tunes to end the concert. The Grateful Dead guitarist was on hand at CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park to lead Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros through a set that included multiple appearances by Willie’s harmonica player, Mickey Raphael.

Willie Nelson & Family and Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack were joined on the bill at Tuesday’s Outlaw Music Festival tour stop by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Waylon Payne. Bobby, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and a five-piece iteration of The Wolfpack horns and strings kicked off their set with a “Playing In The Band” that gave way to “Brown-Eyed Women.” Raphael then emerged to add harmonica to a cover of John Phillips’ “Me And My Uncle.”

The core five-piece band continued the 90-minute performance by working through the Hunter/Garcia ballad “Loser.” Raphael and The Wolfpack were then back in the mix for “Truckin’.” Next, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros and The Wolfpack went sans harmonica as they bridged “He’s Gone” and “Scarlet Begonias.” Mickey Raphael returned to help the ensemble cap their set with additional Dead live favorites “Shakedown Street” and “U.S. Blues.”

Bob Weir, who helped Willie Nelson celebrate his 90th birthday this past April at Hollywood Bowl, came out with guitar in hand to accompany Willie Nelson & Family on the “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?”/”I’ll Fly Away” medley late in the evening on Tuesday. Weir stuck around for the show’s “It’s Hard To Be Humble” finale.

Originally written and recorded by Mac Davis in 1980, Willie Nelson included a cover of “It’s Hard To Be Humble” on his 2019 studio album Ride Me Back Home. Weir looked to Mickey Raphael for help with the chords but quickly caught on to bring the night to a rousing conclusion.
