Watch Bowtied, 20-Year-Old Tyler Childers Performing 1 Of His Early Songs

Last night, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers won the 2023 Americana Award for Album Of The Year for his 2022 album, Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven?. Childers was not in attendance to accept his award at this year’s ceremony held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

Childers was at The Ryman for the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards ceremony during which he was named Emerging Artist Of The Year. The Kentucky native’s breakthrough album, Purgatory, was released in 2017, helping solidify his Americana Award win.

After CBS journalist Anthony Mason mispronounced his last name, Childers delivered a notorious pre-written speech that night at The Ryman.

“As a man who identifies as a country music singer,” Childers stated, “I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin. It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers. It kind of feels like purgatory.”

In January 2020, Childers further explained what drove him to give the incendiary speech. Speaking to World Cafe Live, Childers elaborated on what led to speaking his mind that night in Nashville:

“Well, I was intending to ruffle some feathers I suppose. There was a minute there where I was thinking about what I was getting ready to do and I was like, ‘You know I don’t think I’m going to do this’ and then he said ‘Tyler Child-ers’ and I was like ‘eh, I already got it written out why not?’ so I went up there and did that.
“It was at The Ryman which is the Mother Church of Country Music and they’re holding the Americana Awards, which I feel is a big hindrance in maintaining more true-to-roots country music. And everybody always talks about the state of country music and puts down commercial country and like, somethings gotta be done and we need to be elevating artists that are doing more traditional country, and then we’re not calling those artists ‘country’ artists, they’re getting put into this ‘Americana’ thing.
“It is what it is, and I don’t really know how to define what ‘Americana’ is. We’re our own thing, it’s a new time, and I don’t know what it’s called but I’ve been calling it ‘country,’ you know? I think a lot of times it’s kind of become just a costume.”

Whether or not Childers considers his music “Americana” or “country,” he has now earned Album Of The Year and Emerging Artist Of The Year Americana Awards. While the Emerging Artist nod came in 2018, Childers had been performing and recording his own music for several years before earning the recognition.

Childers’ debut album, Bottles & Bibles, was released seven years before the Americana Music Association named him the top Emerging Artist. Around the time of the debut album’s release, Childers performed on August 27, 2011 at the 2nd Annual Huntington Music and Arts Festival at the Ritter Park Amphitheater in Huntington, Kentucky.

Footage from that early-career appearance of a bow-tied, 20-year-old Childers features his song “Shake The Frost.” Not included on Bottles & Bibles, “Shake The Frost” would later appear on the 2013 live release, Live On Red Barn Radio.
