Watch Eagles Honor Jimmy Buffett On Opening Night Of Farewell Tour

The Eagles launched their “The Long Goodbye” farewell tour on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Last night’s concert included a two-song tribute to old pal Jimmy Buffett, who died last week at age 76.

Jimmy Buffett inducted the Eagles into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Buffett and the Eagles first joined forces when the singer-songwriter opened for the band at a 1975 concert in Columbia, South Carolina as pointed out by Ultimate Classic Rock.

The Eagles — Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of the late Glenn Frey — honored Jimmy Buffett late in their hits-filled main set at The Garden last night. Scmit fronted the band on “Come Monday” from Buffett’s 1974 album, Living and Dying in 3/4 Time, before Walsh helmed a rousing rendition of “Fins” off 1979’s Volcano while wearing a parrot hat.

“Last weekend, we lost a dear friend and the world lost a musical icon — our dear friend Jimmy Buffet. Jimmy Buffet is now sailing on the cosmic ocean having that cheeseburger with Glenn and Randy,” Don Henley told the crowd before the covers, in reference to both late Eagles co-founders Randy Meisner and Glenn Frey, who passed away in 2023 and 2016, respectively.

“We always liked to say, we always laughed and said, ‘We survived the ’70s together.’ And the ’80s were rough, too,” joked Henley. “Jimmy was one of the hardest working men I ever saw, but he made work look like play. He brought joy to everything he did — including the work. And one of his final wishes was that we keep the party going,” Henley added. Don Henley then told the crowd the Eagles would perform two songs Buffett wrote and noted Schmit was a one-time member of Jimmy’s Coral Reefer Band.

The audience gave huge applause to the laidback take on “Fins” after which Schmit explained “our parrothead pal” Joe Walsh would lead the band through a second Jimmy Buffett song. “Jimmy and I got thrown out of some of the finest hotels in the world,” Joe Walsh quipped and added “Thank you, Jimmy!” before the Eagles launched into the riveting “Fins.”

The Eagles also paid tribute to Randy Meiser, the co-founding bassist who died at age 77 on July 26. Early in the show, Vince Gill sang lead on “Take It To The Limit,” a song originally sung by Randy Meisner. In addition to a bevy of hits, last night’s setlist also included a smattering of Joe Walsh solo cuts including “In The City,” “Life’s Been Good,” “Funk #49” and “Rocky Mountain Way.” Additionally, “The Boys Of Summer” from Henley’s 1984 solo LP, Building The Perfect Beast, was played towards the end of the main set.

After Walsh led the aforementioned “Rocky Mountain Way” to kick off the encore on Thursday, the Eagles capped the show with beloved favorites “Desperado” and “Hotel California.” The Eagles return to The Garden tonight. Scroll below for a full list of dates.
