Watch Goose Deliver Potent 25-Minute ‘Thatch’ In Montana

Goose brought their tour to the Kettlehouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Montana on Friday night. The band shared pro-shot video of the 25-minute performance of “Thatch” that opened the show’s second set.

Friday’s “Thatch” was one of several lengthy improvisations played by Goose on Friday at the Kettlehouse Amphitheater. The first set began with the band covering Echo & The Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” for the first time since November 7, 2020. “Mr. Action” came next, followed by the first of two 19-minute songs played in the set, “Time To Flee.” A quick delivery of “Lead Up” segued into a 19-minute “Drive,” with “Red Bird” – featuring its own healthy dose of improv – closing out the set.

The second set started with the massive “Thatch” excursion. Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda steered the early moments of the jam which held onto the song’s groove via Trevor Weekz’s punchy bass slaps. Guitarist/keyboardist Peter Anspach added to funky groove with crunchy Clavinet work while drummer Ben Atkind and percussionist Jeff Arevalo held down a stabilizing rhythm.

Mitarotonda then introduced a biting melodic riff which caused a shift in the dynamics of the jam. Angular and heavy, the mood shifted to darker textures and heightened intensity. After going full on menacing, the vibe shifted and the final act of the jam was a triumphant build to a final, satisfying peak the band seemingly was headed toward from the onset.

Not done dropping big jams, Goose continued the set with Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” ahead of a 20-minute traverse through “Dripfield.” The set wrapped up with “Madhuvan” wrapped around the instrumental “Moby.” Goose tacked on “Animal” for the encore.
