John Mayer held a benefit concert for his veterans health nonprofit Heart and Armor Foundation at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The acoustic performance saw opener Ed Sheeran joining John for Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” along with a Mayer original.

Sheeran’s warm up set, which came after Mayer filled in as opener at one of Ed’s summer concerts in Massachusetts, got going with “Castle on the Hill” from his 2017 album ÷. Ed also delivered more hits from the album including “Perfect” and “Shape Of You.” Additionally, Sheeran offered two songs, “Bad Habits” and “Shivers,” from his latest record =. The singer-songwriter closed with a traditional tune, “The Parting Glass.”

Mayer launched his acoustic set with “Heartbreak Warfare” off his 2009 LP, Battle Studies, followed by “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” — which contained a snippet of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” — from his latest studio album, 2021’s Sob Rock. John closed out the first acoustic guitar segment with “Waitin’ On The Day” before switching to piano for “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me” and “Changing,” which got underway with an electric guitar solo.

Mayer kicked off the second acoustic guitar segment with “In Your Atmosphere” ahead of “Stop This Train” and “Neon,” the latter from his 2001 debut album Room For Squares. Sheeran then emerged to help John on the Mayer favorite “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” followed by the Tom Petty cover.

After a healthy and humorous dose of banter, Mayer and Sheeran got into “Free Falling,” originally appearing on Petty’s 1989 solo album Full Moon Fever. Ed and John swapped the first two verses on the L.A.-referencing song and harmonized on the third as well as the choruses. Watch John Mayer and Ed Sheeran cover “Free Fallin’” below:
