Watch Sturgill Simpson & Margo Price Cover Tom Petty At Farm Aid

Farm Aid board member Margo Price was joined by Sturgill Simpson during her set Saturday in Noblesville, Indiana. Simpson, whose Farm Aid appearance was a surprise and saw him also sitting in with Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, joined Price and her band The Pricetags for several songs, including a cover of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”

Simpson came onstage midway through Price’s set. The collaboration began with Simpson playing guitar and singing lead on “Life Of Sin,” from his 2014 album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. Simpson then stuck around for the remainder of Price’s set.

Price and Simpson then joined forces on a cover of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” The song’s reference to “Indiana boys” drew a cheer from the crowd at the venue formerly known as Deer Creek. Price’s husband/bandmate Jeremy Ivey delivered the song’s signature harmonica part, while Simpson slayed the guitar solo.

Despite having produced Price’s 2020 album, That’s How Rumors Get Started, Simpson’s sit-in did include any of the songs from the album. Instead, Simpson rounded out his sit-in by accompanying Price on “Paper Cowboy” from her 2017 EP Weakness and “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle)” from her 2016 album, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter.
