Watch Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB Perform Atmospheric ‘Quantegy’ In Athens

Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB returned to The Georgia Theatre last night for their second of two performances at the Athens venue. The quartet unveiled their version of Anastasio rarity “Quantegy” during the second set.

Anastasio is joined in the project by keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Russ Lawton. The Phish guitarist has devoted much of September to touring with Classic TAB. Thursday’s concert was the four-piece’s final headline concert of the two-week trek. On Saturday, Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB conclude the run by performing at the Healing Appalachia festival in Lewisburg, West Virginia.

“Quantegy” was written by the Phish guitarist for inclusion on his debut solo album, 1998’s One Man’s Trash. The song was debuted live at the Trey Anastasio Band‘s Independence Day 2001 concert at the original Higher Ground in Winooski, Vermont. While a staple for TAB during the summer of 2001, a mere two versions followed in 2002 along with a take from Trey’s 70 Volt Parade outfit in 2005 before “Quantegy” disappeared from the repertoire.

Trey Anastasio brought back “Quantegy” at his fourth The Beacon Jams livestream concert on October 30, 2020. Anastasio was joined on the song and for most of the night by Paczkowski, Lawton, original TAB bassist Tony Markellis and percussionist Cyro Baptista. The lone acoustic version came as part of Trey Anastasio’s Rubber Jungle Live session for SiriusXM’s Phish Radio on May 14, 2021. TAB went on to play the tune three times that fall and twice in 2022 including a version with Goose’s Rick Mitarotonda and Peter Anspach in Syracuse.

The Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB debut of “Quantegy” was a slow-burning rendition showcasing the guitarist’s angular leads and stellar Clavinet work from Ray Paczkowski. Dezron Douglas and Ray Paczkowski held down the groove allowing Anastasio and Paczkowski to soar. Trey stacked delay loops as he sang the song’s few lyrics.

Last night’s setlist featured a mix of Phish classics and career-spanning solo gems. The quartet opened with “If I Could See The World” from Anastasio’s 2020 lockdown album Lonely Trip. “Wolfman’s Brother” followed with other Phish songs played last night including “Blaze On,” “46 Days,” “The Moma Dance,” “No Men In No Man’s Land,” “Twist” and a funky “Llama.” Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB’s second night in Athens also featured such solo tunes as “The Greater Good,” “In Rounds,” “Spin” and “Everything’s Right.”

Trey Anastasio returned to start the encore solo acoustic for “Snowflakes In The Sand,” “Strange Design” and “More.” Paczkowski, Douglas and Lawton then emerged to back the guitarist on the evening’s “First Tube” finale. Official audio can be streamed with a LivePhish+ subscription.
