Billy Strings launched a two-night stand in Portland, Oregon on Friday. The guitarist ripped through his premiere at Rip City’s Moda Center, home of the NBA’s Trail Blazers, and got shredded to cap the concert.
Billy Strings and his bandmates mandolinist Jarrod Walker, bassist Royal Masat, banjo player Billy Failing and fiddler Alex Hargreaves took the stage for their encore at the Moda Center on Friday with Strings wearing a muscle costume. “I heard you guys wanted an encore!” Strings addressed the crowd in a professional wrestler growl. “You’re getting a god damn encore and that’s the bottom line!” After some flexing, Strings and company ripped through The Oak Ridge Boys recorded, Doc Watson covered “Dig A Little Deeper In The Well.”
Billy’s Rose City arena gag was given some context this morning when the guitarist announced the “Van Andel Scramble” theme for his upcoming Halloween concert at Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena in Billy’s home state of Michigan. The announcement video played on the professional wrestling angle but even more intriguing was the lineup of special guests: Sierra Hull, Mark Lavengood, John Mailander, Bill Nershi, Chris Pandolfi, Molly Tuttle and “the formidable” Duane Trucks on drums
After “Dig A Little Deeper In The Well,” a song Strings, included on his 2022 album Me / And / Dad in Portland, Billy did some more flexing for the crowd to “Louie Louie” before exiting stage right. Check out the encore shenanigans below:

A pairing of instrumental “Bronzeback” and “The Fire On My Tongue” — the latter closed with a “Must Be Seven” tease — got the first set underway in Portland. “Fire On My Tongue” was among a number of songs from Strings’ 2021 album, Renewal, appearing in the concert on Friday in Portland, the hometown of banjo player Billy Failing. The quintet also paid tribute to Portland’s own Fruition with a a bust out of their “Labor Of Love,” which they fit into a four-song sequence at the tail end of the second set. Billy and company closed out the second frame with a cover of “Ruby.”
