Bob Dylan is now two cities into his fall tour and has paid tribute to both locations that hosted him. Dylan performed a pair of Chuck Berry covers last night at his concert in the late rock pioneer’s hometown of St. Louis after he opened a two-night stand in Kansas City with his first cover of Lieber-Stoller’s “Kansas City” since 1986.
Wednesday’s Bob Dylan concert took place at Stifel Theatre in St. Louis. Dylan was on baby grand for the duration of the 18-song performance backed by guitarist Doug Lancio, bassist Tony Garnier, drummer Jerry Pentecost, guitarist Bob Britt and Donnie Herron on violin, electric mandolin, pedal steel and lap steel. The 82-year-old Nobel Laureate kicked off the show with “Johnny B. Goode.”
One of the best-known songs of the 20th century, the Chuck Berry-penned “Johnny B. Goode” was initially released by the “Father Of Rock ‘n’ Roll” in 1958. Last night marked the first time Bob Dylan performed the tune during one of his own sets. He previously covered “Johnny B. Goode” at the “Silver Wilburys” show in Hollywood on February 19, 1987 with Taj Mahal, George Harrison, John Fogerty and Jesse Ed Davis as well as with The Dead in Somerset, Wisconsin on August 3, 2003.
The cover debut replaced Dylan’s usual opener, “Watching The River Flow.” Bob then followed the same script as most other Rough And Rowdy Ways World Wide Tour 2021-2024 as he fit nine of the 10 songs from the 2020 album that gave the tour its name into the setlist along with a handful of classics. However, he did have one more surprise in store to end the evening.

Watch Bob Dylan Cover Songs Written By ‘1 Of His Favorite Songwriters’
Bob Dylan went back to the Chuck Berry well to close out his show in St. Louis with “Nadine (Is It You?)” The 1964 single was the first song Berry released following a one-and-a-half year prison term served for transporting a 14-year-old girl across state lines in violation of the Mann Act. “One need only listen to ‘Nadine (Is It You?),’ released in February 1964, and then to the 1965 Dylan album Bringing It All Back Home, with its surreal story-songs, to hear the similarities,” wrote AllMusic’s William Ruhlmann of the “profound influence” the song had on Bob Dylan.
Dylan previously performed “Nadine (Is It You?)” once prior to last night. The last version also came in St. Louis back on June 17, 1988 as per Setlist.FM’s stats. Stream the Bob Dylan debut of “Nadine” below:
