The Grateful Dead detailed Dave’s Picks Volume 48: Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA (11/20/71), due out October 27. UCLA basketball legend and renowned Deadhead Bill Walton wrote the liner notes for the previously unreleased concert he attended as a student-athlete — selected by Dead archivist David Lemieux.
Read an excerpt from Walton’s liner notes:
“Basketball and music have always been alike for me, the celebration of life and all other good things. These two art forms represent the best of teamwork, constant motion, creativity, leadership, communication, focus, execution, friendship, loyalty, cooperation, hope, opportunity, purpose, sacrifice, discipline, honor, and fun. Fun to play. Fun to practice. UCLA and the Grateful Dead embody the highest levels of this celebratory joy. At UCLA, it was endless fun, every day, in every way. We couldn’t wait to get there, to get going — though it was never as much fun as when the Grateful Dead came to play with and for us.”
Recorded by Rex Jackson and mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering, Dave’s Picks Volume 48 captures the Grateful Dead’s debut at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. The band would return to the University of California Los Angeles spot sporadically in the 1970s and into the early ’80s. The concert saw a number of songs that would land on the Dead’s landmark live collection Europe ‘72 including live favorites and tracks off the band’s 1970 studio albums American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead.
The three-disc collection also contains psychedleic standouts like 23-minute “The Other One” that came during the second set. Also of note, by late November new pianist had been playing with the band for about a month to augment the ailing Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who was absent for the complete show at Pauley in November 1971. As a bonus, Dave’s Picks Volume 48 includes portions of the Grateful Dead’s October 24, 1970 concert in St. Louis.
