Subscriptions for the Grateful Dead‘s four Dave’s Picks live archival releases set to arrive in 2024 went on sale today and included news on the shows featured in the 49th installment of the audio series. Dave’s Picks Volume 49 will contain every note the band played at Frost Amphitheater on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California on April 27 and 28, 1985.
The 4-CD set, scheduled for release in January, marks the first time 1985 will be represented in the Dave’s Picks series. “They’re so good, they’ve been on my radar from this year for literally decades, since really early 2000s,” Grateful Dead archivist/legacy manager David Lemieux said of the Frost 1985 run in his “Seaside Chat” about the 2024 Dave’s Picks subscriptions. “I’ve given these shows consideration and for whatever reason it didn’t happen,” Lemieux added. He also hinted that Dave’s Picks Volume 50 is “an incredibly special show.”
1985 was the Grateful Dead’s 20th Anniversary Year. The lineup at the time featured guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Brent Mydland and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Frost Amphitheater is located a stone’s throw from where the band played their first show in 1965 at Magoo’s Pizza and hosted 14 Grateful Dead shows between 1982 and 1989.
On April 27, 1985 the group opened with a potent “Dancin’ In The Streets.” Other highlights from the first night of the run include a riveting sequence pairing “Scarlet Begonias” and “Eyes Of The World” to kick off the second set, a “The Wheel” the band drove into “Truckin’” and Phil Lesh belting out “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” to the delight of the crowd.
Brent Mydland shined on the “Gimme Some Lovin’” that began the second night on April 28, 1985 — the first time The Spencer Davis Group cover appeared in the opening stanza. There is also a wild “Playing In The Band” that spans multiple songs as well as a bevy of Jerry Garcia vocal showcases in “Bird Song,” “Crazy Fingers,” “China Doll” and “Wharf Rat.” Garcia also shined on the “She Belongs To Me” finale which was just the third time the Dead had performed the Bob Dylan classic since 1966.
Dave’s Picks 2024 subscriptions include all four limited edition, numbered releases due out next year as well as a bonus disc. Early bird pricing entitles those who purchase the subscription to a minimum savings of $39 as opposed to buying each installment a la carte.
